Only two books in the Bible – Esther and Ruth – are named for women. These inspiring books tell the stories of two young women whose lives played an important role in Israel’s history. In this study, we will look at the book of Ruth.
In the first part of this study we learned how Esther became queen of the most powerful ruler of this era and how the deeds of one evil man almost resulted in the annihilation of the Jews in the Persian Empire. In Part 2 we will see how two Jews, Mordecai and Esther, thwarted his evil plans.
God has chosen to make faith one of the foundation stones of our relationship with him. But how much do we truly understand about faith? In this study, we hope to answer questions you may have about this vital subject.
In the first part of our study we learned that our faith is so important to God that He has wrapped our spiritual life and all his promises in it. We also learned that when we have little faith, the first thing we can do is to pray for God to increase it.
To fast has traditionally meant to abstain from all or certain foods. Fasting has been practiced for specific reasons by God's people since ancient times: for repentance, for guidance, for sorrow and grief. Jesus, the Bread of Life, is our spiritual food in times of spiritual hunger. Portuguese Translation
In the first part of this study, we looked at the history of fasting in the Bible and discussed some of the reasons Christians and Jews have fasted through the ages. In this part, we will continue to look at additional reasons. Portuguese Translation
Many of our readers are too young to remember the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930’s. During this war supporters of the rebel forces formed a clandestine subversive organization which worked within Madrid, then enemy territory, to help their own political and military causes. One rebel general named the subversive group The Fifth Column. Today, this term remains a picturesque addition to our vocabulary, meaning an enemy working secretly from within.
In the first part of this study we showed the totally helpless condition unsaved man finds himself in. In this part, we show God’s solution to the problem.
Because of Adam and Eve's sin and the resulting separation from God, worry and anxiety have become a natural part of the human condition. But what do we do then with the Bible's command to not be anxious about anything? How we can do this is the focus of this study.
In Part 1 of this study we looked at some of the reason the human race is plagued with worry and anxiety. In this second half, we will learn how we can be victorious over these debilitating emotions.
Friendship is one of our most beautiful and intimate relationships. Only with a friend can we share our lives, our hopes, and our joys. It is often difficult to have a true friend. Fortunately, there is One who wants to be our friend. Let's see what friendship with God entails.
How do you see your singleness: Do you consider it to be a blessing? Or do you see it as a curse? Do you feel God couldn't possible understand what it's like to be single, or He'd never impose singleness on people? Perhaps you'll be surprised to learn that God has a very different perspective about singleness.
In the first part of our study, we looked at the ministry of John the Baptist, Mary, the mother of Jesus, Jesus and Paul. In this study, we will consider Mary Magdalene, the woman of Samaria, and Mary and Martha of Bethany.

God is no respecter of persons and He values women every bit as much as He does men. If we will carefully search Scripture, we find that regardless of culture, social or economic conditions, God is constantly revealing His love and concern for women.
In our first lesson, we saw how God's choice of women is an indication of the importance He places on them. In this lesson, we will begin to look more closely at His attitude towards different kinds of women or women in different roles and situations.
In this lesson, we will see Jesus' compassion as He related to people, particularly women who were sick, both physically and emotionally.
Throughout the ages, society in general has given very little place or status for women who are not under the protection of a husband, son or other male relative. God, however, has mercy, and He always incorporated provision into His law for their care.
Jesus is known to most Christians as our Savior and all that implies, and the Holy Spirit as encouraging and self-effacing. However, too many see the Father as Someone judgmental and demanding. Unfortunately, this is a totally inaccurate picture. In our study we will try to correct this wrong idea by showing what the Bible has to say about the Father.
In the first part of this study, we looked at some of the characteristics of the Father and His relationship to Jesus and us. In this part we will continue examining what the Bible says.
Who is this mysterious Person, Power, Force, we call the Holy Spirit? For many Christians He remains a mystery. In this study we hope to help you see Who this member of the Trinity is and what He does.
In the first lesson, we learned that the Holy Spirit has been active in the world since creation. This study continues with the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of Jesus and how He empowered Jesus for His ministry.
In the first two lessons, we studied the work of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament and in the life of Jesus. In this lesson we will see how the Holy Spirit works in the life of the believer today, empowering, equipping, and strengthening him.
Perhaps you're a new Christian. Or maybe you've been a Christian for many years but aren't experiencing the spiritual growth you feel you should. Whatever your reason, with so much promise ahead, you are now in a vulnerable position. In a very real sense you are like a newborn infant who needs proper food and training to grow into a strong, mature child of God.
In the first two parts of this study, we learned the importance of receiving the Holy Spirit, reading the Bible, and blooming where we're planted. In this part, we will see the importance of fellowship with other Christians and learning to recognize Jesus' voice.
In previous studies we have studied three of Jesus' “I Am's” which He used to describe Himself: I Am, I Am the Bread of Life, and I Am the Good Shepherd. In this study we will look at Jesus as the True Vine, which produces spiritual fruit.
In the first part of our study we looked at what the Bible has to say about spiritual fruit. Now we look at pruning, the process by which our Gardener ensures a larger crop.
One of our favorite accounts in the Bible is the creation story - the drama of our beginnings - both the earth's and ours personally. We love to read the story of how God created the world and all that's in it. It also shows us how God is always willing to give us a second chance.
In the first part of this study, we learned how God created the earth and mankind, and we also saw the beginnings of Satan and how he corrupted Adam and Eve. In this section, we will see other beginnings in the history of mankind.
The Bible tells us that God wants all of us to be intercessors. Intercession is simply one form of prayer. In this study, we hope to take some of the mystery out of intercession and show you how to become the intercessor God wants you to be. Nepalese Translation, Russian Translation, Portuguese Translation
In the first part of this study, we learned that God wants all of us to be intercessors - to cooperate with Him in bringing His plans to fruition. In this second part, we will show you what else the Bible teaches to make us successful intercessors. Nepalese Translation, Russian Translation, Portuguese Translation
Next to Israel, Iraq is the nation most often mentioned in the Bible. Our newspapers are filled with articles about Iraq because of current world events. Considering the significance of Iraq can only make us wonder what God has planned for this country.
Terah, a descendant of Noah was the father of Abram (Abraham). They lived in UR, which was in southern Iraq. Eventually they settled in Haran. We will continue our study of the significance of Iraq by examining the stories of Abraham and other Biblical characters.
Is Jesus a Savior for everyone or is He only for a few select believers? Unfortunately, some people believe He is a white, western God, while the rest of the world is better served by other gods. This study explores the subject of salvation in the book of Luke. The Spirit-Filled Life Bible emphasizes that no one who reads [this book of Luke] should feel that he is beyond the reach of salvation.
In part 2 of this study we further explore Jesus as Savior to everyone with emphasis on the salvation of specific women in the Bible.
Jesus used many different analogies to describe Himself. In John, we find the seven I AMs: I AM; the bread of life; the light of the world; the good shepherd; the true vine; the resurrection and the life; and the way, the truth, and the life. Today we will focus on the I AM, and the Bread of Life.
In the first part of this study, we looked at the significance of the name I AM, the name the Jews recognized as God's name and the name Jesus used to identify Himself as being God. In this part of the study we will look at a second name, the Bread of Life.
Although scientists and other religions have complex theories about the creation of the world, the Bible explains it succintly. In this study we will learn how Jesus created the world and also makes us a new creation through salvation. Nepalese Translation
All of the people Jesus touched were not "notorious sinners". In this half of the study we will look at others whom Jesus "re-created". Nepalese Translation
John the Baptist is called a herald in the coming of Christ. This study explores his role in bringing Jesus to the earth.
There are nearly 500 references in the Bible to joy or rejoicing. Many of these words express exceeding gladness, boasting, exulting, shouting and even jumping for joy. God wants us to be joyful - and to express it.
In the first part of this study, we looked at both the characteristics of joy and what hinders us from obtaining it. In this half, we want to see why God encourages us to have faith and is grieved by our grumbling and complaining.
The picture of the ever-faithful shepherd who meets all our needs is a familiar one to Christians. Shepherding has played an important role in the life and economy of the Israelites since the days of Adam and Eve. Portuguese Translation
In the first part of this study, we concentrated on the shepherd. In the second part, we want to better see the relationship between the shepherd and his sheep, how he cares and protects the flock, even at the cost of his own life. Portuguese Translation
Is there ever enough money for our needs? When I was growing up, although the average family didn't have much, most families regularly put aside money in their savings account. Today, many families are thousands of dollars in debt, slaves to their merciless credit cards. While it is true that consumer debt is growing and the financial plight of the world is growing, I believe God wants us to trust Him with our finances.
The novel, The DaVinci Code, by Dan Brown has provoked an outpouring of emotion; everything from fascination with "new ideas" about Jesus' life to anger over the falsifying of biblical truth. One example is Brown's promise that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married. This is not a new idea, but in light of the widespread publicity the book has received, I believe it would be wise to go to the Bible for the true picture of Mary Magdalene and her relationship with Jesus.
Several Marys are written about in the New Testament, which can be confusing. Our study is based on the woman usually called Mary of Bethany.
Mary, the mother of Jesus, is probably the most beloved woman in Christian history, the favorite subject of many painters, sculptors and musicians, but the Bible is sparse in its information of her. However, we do know that she was a virgin (Isa. 7:14) and Luke 1:27, that she was engaged to Joseph (v, 26), that she favor with God (v. 29), and that she was obedient to God (Luke 1:38). Our first glimpse of Mary is through Old Testament prophecy.
In the first part of this study we learned who Mary was and of the circumstances leading to Jesus' birth. In Part 2, we follow Mary's life until she witnesses Jesus' crucifixion and ascension.
Who hasn't thrilled over Jesus' awe-inspiring miracles in the New Testament? Because their recounting is a part of our culture, many are familiar with them, even non-Christians. In this study we will try to bring perspective to them and understand their purpose in Jesus' ministry.
In the first part of this study, we reviewed the reasons why Jesus performed miracles. In the next two parts we will look at many of the miracles themselves.
In the previous part, we began looking at some of the miracles Jesus performed: physical healing, displaying His power over natural events, and casting out demons. We continue that study in this part.
God wants His people to know Him intimately. One way He does this is through revealing His many names, each with a particular meaning. Throughout the ages we see Him giving His people a fuller revelation of Himself, finally culminating in the perfect revelation, Jesus Christ.
We have already seen many of the faces of God. We have seen him as Creator, as a faithful God who wants His creation to love Him, as the God who is sufficient, and as a God of provision. We continue our study in Part 2.
God has given us a revelation of Himself through His many names. We will continue this study in Part 3.
To understand what the Bible means when it speaks of our authority in Christ, it is necessary for us to fully understand who Christ is, who He was before He was born on earth, what His sacrificial death accomplished, and what he is doing today. Portuguese Translation
In the first part of this study, we looked at several aspects of Jesus' authority. In this second half, we will look at the principle of delegated authority and how it applies to us. Portuguese Translation
Literally, compassion means suffering with another, having pity and sympathy for others. God is our compassionate Father and Jesus is our compassionate Savior, our King who rules with gentleness and mercy. As we watch Him move against the backdrop of the Palestinian countryside, we see His compassion every step of the way. Nepalese Translation
In the first part of this study on Jesus' compassion, we looked at many healings and acts of mercy He performed. In this part, we will continue that study. Nepalese Translation
As Christians, we are engaged in a spiritual war between Jesus and His armies and that of Satan and his hordes. Jesus, as our commander, has provided us with the weapons and armor necessary for war. Our duty is to pick them up and put them on. Portuguese Translation
In the first section of this study, we began to look at the armor and weapons the Christian soldier's commander equips him with. In this part of the study, we will look at the rest of his equipment. Portuguese Translation
People are rediscovering that praise and worship draws them closer to God. In their newfound intimacy with the Lord, they begin to change into the kind of people he wants His followers to be. Wouldn't we all like that to happen in our lives? Nepalese Translation, Spanish Translation
Pride has been defined as the "sin of an uplifted heart against God and man". In this study, we will examine what the Bible has to say about pride and how God views it.
In the first part of our study on pride, we concentrated on its ugliness and God's attitude toward it. In this next section, we will look at humility, the opposite of pride.
There are great rewards in following God's commands, but most of His promises are conditional. Before we can receive the great rewards offered, we must first obey the conditions.
Do you sometimes feel that living the Christian life is too hard? If so, there's good news - God didn't command us to live a righteous life, then just leave us to figure it out. Scriptures provides us with the answers to all the issues of life.
The Promises of God – Part 2 Page 1 THE PROMISES OF GOD Part 2 Introduction Our God is a promise-making and a promise-keeping God. No one can read the Bible without becoming aware that it is filled with His promises. In the first part of this study, we learned that God gives us His promises to equip us for living a victorious life.
In this study, we are going to devote our attention to Jesus' ancestor Rahab, a heathen women through whom and to whom God performed a mighty miracle.
People are rediscovering that praise and worship draws them closer to God. In their newfound intimacy with the Lord, they begin to change into the kind of people he wants His followers to be. Wouldn't we all like that to happen in our lives?
Good relationships include freedom. God gives us free will, but He also gives us the tools we need to help us be obedient to Him. The effects of sin make us capable of many evil characteristics and deeds. Let's see what Jesus had to say about this subject. Nepalese Translation
Why is the resurrection of such prime importance in the Christian faith? Why is Easter our most important Christian holiday, even more important than Christmas. In the study we take a look at the answer to those questions by examining the events immediately following Jesus crucifixion.
In part 2 of this study we will answer the question: Why is the resurrection so important to the Christian faith? In this part we will also look at the differences between the earthly and the resurrected bodies, as well as the future state of both the Christian and the non-Christian.
Today, a shocking number of people, including Christians, do not believe in an actual devil. That's exactly what Satan wants us to do. Such a belief leaves him at liberty to bring his evil and destruction into the world, enabling him to oppose and harass the followers of our Lord.
We live in a world which conducts business as usual against the backdrop of a fierce war waging between two kingdoms—Christ's kingdom of light and Satan's kingdom of darkness. It is a war in which we Christians have an important role to play.
In Part I of Spiritual Warfare we learned that we are all soldiers in the Lord's army and that our job is to enforce Jesus' victory over Satan which he won by his death on the cross. In Part 2 we will look at the authority and weapons every Christian possesses.
In Parts 1 and 2 of Spiritual Warfare, we learned that we are soldiers in the Lord's army. In Part 3 we will look at some important principles of spiritual warfare and at examples of warfare taken from the Old Testament to see how they apply to our spiritual warfare today.
Christians are encouraged to be good stewards. But good stewards of what? What does the term imply? In this study, we will take a broad look at stewardship.
One of the difficulties of studying the Holy Spirit is the problem of building a concrete, physical picture of Him. However, the Spirit, His purposes, and work can be compared to other things more understandable to us, and this is what God has done through the writers of Scripture. Through the analogies, with descriptions of physical things, and ordinary events in people's lives, He has helped us understand spiritual truths.
The words tempting and testing are frequently used interchangeably in the Bible. However, temptation is usually used in the concept of sin, while testing is used with the idea of God proving or trying our faith and obedience.
Total Victory – Part 1 Page 1 TOTAL VICTORY Part 1 The Introduction Satan was completely defeated and stripped of all ultimate power at the cross. We have occasionally reminded you that the physical in the Old Testament can be understood as the spiritual in the New Testament. No place is this more true than the pictures given us of the walls of the city and the watchmen who stood guard on them.
In the first part of this study, we learned the importance of well-constructed walls and the duty of the watchmen who patrolled them. In Part 2 we will learn how to repair and rebuild our spiritual walls and gates.

Just what does it mean to be saved? A cartoon shows an old-fashioned revival meeting at which the emcee is introducing the evening's speaker. "And now Brother Jones is going to share with us how he was saved...from a herd of rhinoceroses." Maybe this isn't the funniest joke you've ever heard but it has one important quality...lt doesn't leave us questioning what this speaker means by being saved.
In the first part of this study we examined what the Bible means when it speaks of salvation or of being saved. In this section we'll continue that study, as well as look at how we are saved and how to receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit.
As members of a fallen race, we are quick to judge ourselves and declare a guilty verdict. The Bible, however, gives us an entirely different picture of those who are in Christ. Only when we understand this picture, will we understand what Jesus did for us when He died on the cross, and live the victorious life He planned for us.
In Part 1, we learned some of the wonderful benefits that are the heritage of those who are in Christ. In Part 2, we'll look at more of the incredible blessings we receive when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior.
Why do Christians have to suffer? Didn't Jesus say that He had come "to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed" (Luke 4: 18), "to bind up the broken hearted...and to comfort all who mourn" (Isaiah 61: 1, 2)? Surely, that includes suffering. Nepalese Translation
Why is Jesus so special that He can claim He is the only way that leads to God? There are many reasons Jesus is so "special." Perhaps the most important one is that He deals with the consequences of sin. Let's look at what the Bible has to say on this subject.
In the first part of this study we looked at some of the reasons why Jesus is the only way to eternal life. We continue by looking at more of the benefits we received by Jesus' death. Nepalese Translation
Jesus seems to be saying in the Bible that all we have to do is ask and we will receive whatever we ask for. Why then do many of our prayers go unanswered? In this study we will attempt to explain why many of our prayers go unanswered and show how we can receive what we pray for.
In the first part of this study, we considered some of the reasons our prayers are not answered in the way we would like them to be. In this part, we will search for more reasons.
The Bible is not only applicable for today, but it still speaks its life-giving message to believers' hearts and minds. It is essential reading for every Christian. In this study we will look at how the Bible describes itself and why we should read it.
In the first part of this study, we looked at some of the reasons we should read the Bible. In this section, we will continue that study.
Speaking in tongues or praying in the Spirit, both terms for this gift, is mentioned many times in Scripture. Whether you are merely curious about speaking in tongues, whether you are seeking this gift, or whether you are a strong opponent, we invite you to study this important subject with us.
In the first part of our study, we looked at many of the reasons why God has given us the gift of tongues. In this part we continue our study.
If you know any Christians, you're undoubtedly familiar with the phrase, "You must be born again." But just what does being "born again" mean? The term "born again" can also be translated "born anew", "born from above," or "born from God." In this study we will primarily use "born again", because it is the most familiar and because it is easiest to understand.
In the first half of this study, we looked at the difference between the birth of the flesh and the birth of the spirit. In this part we will explore God's solution for the spiritual birth.
If you could ask the Lord for only one gift what would you chooose? Would it be wealth or success? Fame or position? Happiness? Or would you take a page from King Solomon's book and ask for wisdom?
